Levelling-Up funding from the UK Government is making a difference to projects all over Scotland – with Perth and Dunfermline as the latest cities to receive a major funding boost. The two locations will share a pot of £10 million that can be used for cultural or regeneration projects. The money was announced by UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in his spring Budget.
It will give both Fife and Perth and Kinross councils the freedom and power to decide how best to use the funding – and it means that every city in Scotland will have benefitted from Levelling-Up funding.
This funding is the latest in a series of recent Levelling-Up investments from UK Governments which have been awarded to cities.
In Glasgow, the city council has received nearly £15 million to invest in Drumchapel town centre. This north west area of the city will see improved connectivity and better retail facilities which will boost the local economy.
Meanwhile, in Inverness, three projects are sharing nearly £20 million of Levelling-Up money. The projects include the transformation of Inverness Castle into a world-class visitor centre. It’s due to open next year and the vast majority of businesses that are involved in the project are from the local community, which means that the Highland area’s workforce and economy are the big winners.
In Aberdeen, £20 million of Levelling-Up money will include funding for a new market building which will be a high quality leisure destination for locals and visitors alike. It will also feature food outlets that will promote local produce, and a selection of cafes. The development will also make it easier for pedestrians to walk from Union Street to the bus and railway stations through an improved route.
And in Stirling, the council is using an award of £19 million to upgrade the Forthside area of the city in a project that could create 1,000 jobs. The 40-acre site will be developed to attract new businesses and provide the opportunity for existing local firms to thrive and grow.
Levelling-Up funding is bringing major benefits across the country and our cities are putting the cash to good use in a way that will bring jobs and investment to Scotland.
