Hydrogen power is at the core of Scotland’s strategy for economic development and achieving net-zero targets, this is supported as Energy Secretary Gillian Martin emphasised:

“Hydrogen is one of Scotland’s greatest industrial opportunities since oil and gas, and we have the environment, skills, knowledge, and experience to become a driving force of the hydrogen sector in Europe and beyond.”

The hydrogen sector has the potential to support up to 300,000 highly-skilled jobs by 2045, bringing significant societal benefits to Scotland. Aberdeen, known as the “Hydrogen City” – is leading the way.

Aberdeen is developing Scotland’s first commercially scalable hydrogen production and distribution facility in partnership with BP. This facility aims to deliver economic, environmental, and social benefits, utilising wind and solar power to create a sustainable energy cycle.

Community involvement is crucial for the success of such projects, and the Aberdeen Schools Hydrogen Challenge is a strong example. This initiative has helped develop key skills, foster collaboration and innovation, and educate young people about the opportunities in the hydrogen and renewable energy sectors.

The challenge involved designing and building a LEGO car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, with the most efficient car being crowned the champion. Over 750 (S2) pupils participated, and the program received positive feedback, with 94% of survey respondents enjoying the experience and 84% learning more about local hydrogen projects. This initiative is truly inspiring the next generation to explore the sector.

Thomas Wild, Head of Stemovaters, commented:

“This project, only possible with the support of our industry partners, helps young people develop valuable skills and knowledge whilst learning about the career pathways in the hydrogen sector. The regional final is a culmination of the project and gives an opportunity where young people can showcase their innovation and hard work.”

Scotland is well-positioned to benefit from a hydrogen economy and establish itself as an export nation. Here are some advancements in other cities:
