The masterplan outlines a 20-year development strategy for Aberdeen city centre. It identifies a series of ambitious but deliverable projects that will support future economic growth and will secure more benefits and opportunities for the communities of Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire
The multi-million projects include changes to Union Street Central, the creation of a new city market, and the revitalisation of the beach area, with plans for a pier, new green hub, and a state-of-the-art sports area which could include a new stadium for Aberdeen FC.
The works are split into projects – city centre including Union Street and the West End, Aberdeen Market, Queen Street, the beach area, and combined city and beach areas.
The Beach Masterplan is designed capitalise on the built and natural assets of the area which is a tourism priority in its own right and will continue to be in demand in a post-CV19 and recovery phase as people seek safe, outdoor, wildlife, and active experiences. The beach area is also an intrinsic component of the Aberdeen Coastal Trail, and the wide variety of tourism offer that includes nature, golf, maritime history, and dolphin watching.
All the projects, with the exception of the new market building, are in the design stages with extensive stakeholder consultation taking place including with children and young people.
The new market was given planning permission in May 2022, and it will be a destination venue featuring international-style food and drink outlets. The development will also create a pedestrian connectivity including escalators and lifts between Union Street and the bus and railway stations via The Green and enliven Hadden Street and Market Street with urban realm improvements in and around The Green.
A pro-active approach to developer, investor and end user stakeholders is a key feature of this opportunity as plans progress.
