Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is the UK’s most prosperous city (with the highest gross domestic product per capita) and boasts the UK’s best educated workforce (with the highest proportion of working age residents educated to RQF4+). With a population of over half a million, Edinburgh is at the heart of the wider Edinburgh city region.
Edinburgh is an international hub for business, leisure, and innovation, with prowess in sectors including financial services, software and technology, tourism, and academia.
Beyond its highly skilled population, the city’s key strengths include its built heritage (home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites), connectivity (with Edinburgh Airport offering direct flights to well over 100 destinations worldwide), culture (including the world-famous Edinburgh festivals), and knowledge economy (with multiple universities, colleges, and research institutes, including the University of Edinburgh, regularly ranked one of the world’s top universities).

Cllr Jane Meagher
Leader, The City of Edinburgh Council
“The core strategic objectives of the Council are to create good places to live and work across Edinburgh, end poverty in the city, and deliver a net zero city by 2030. These ambitious goals shape our approach to investment in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh is currently benefiting from a number of initiatives that are unlocking new pathways for investment. These include Forth Green Freeport, which offers tax incentives and other support for investors in the Port of Leith; the new Edinburgh Visitor Levy, which will generate funds for investment in areas such as city operations and infrastructure and culture, heritage, and events; and the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, which is marshalling large-scale investment areas such as innovation, skills, and housing.
Looking to the future, we have aspirations for further major investment in public transport, clean heat, and other pieces of infrastructure that will facilitate inclusive growth, and adhere to fair work principles.
Building upon Edinburgh’s core strengths – its skilled workforce, built and natural heritage, culture, global connectivity, and knowledge economy – initiatives such the above make Edinburgh a compelling place to invest.”
