Policy

What we do

The Scottish Cities Alliance policy workstream is informed by the Fraser of Allander Institute’s Scottish Cities Outlook report which highlights the critical contribution the cities make to Scotland’s economy. The report identifies five key intertwined issues that will require greater collaborative working not only between the cities but also with all tiers of government, enterprise agencies, higher and further education and the private sector if Scotland’s cities are to remain economically competitive.

Policy Advocacy

The Alliance’s ability to facilitate collaboration between city, Scottish and UK political leaders is a key USP of the partnership, enabling a forum for discussion on the policy and funding levers necessary to support the attraction of investment, jobs and economic growth in Scotland. By championing the specific needs and aspirations of Scotland’s urban areas, the Alliance collaborates with decision-makers to shape policies that drive economic prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability in a way that facilitates the attraction of private investment.

How do we do this?

  • Collaboration and stakeholder engagement: By bringing together local authorities, national government, government agencies, businesses, and academia the Alliance fosters a collaborative environment where diverse perspectives can shape key policy agendas. Engaging stakeholders in the policy-making process helps build consensus and ensures that solutions are relevant and effective

  • Influencing policy: the Alliance engages with government bodies to advocate for policy and funding levers that support sustainable urban development, economic growth, and social economic growth and social equity

  • Research, evidence and best practice: the Alliance works across partners and other organisations to identify opportunities to address urban challenges including highlighting innovative solutions for different cities and promoting knowledge exchange that can better inform policymaking

  • Long-term vision: the Alliance advocates for policies and delivery mechanisms that support sustainable growth and long-term urban planning. By focusing on current and future needs such as net zero, city centres, smart cities and research and knowledge exchange capacity we can help cities thrive in an evolving landscape
