The Highland Council, with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), co-funded five projects as part of the 8th City Programme, enhancing urban services and fostering sustainable growth.
The Open Data project involved developing an open data platform in collaboration with Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, and Stirling. This platform was later transitioned to THC’s open spatial data platform in 2020, a model subsequently adopted by other Scottish cities.

In partnership with HITRANS, the Smart Mobility project established a scalable wireless mesh network for digital services, including Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) solutions, Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI), and smart parking features.

The Smart Waste project introduced route optimization software, enhancing waste collection routes and improving service efficiency.

Originally part of a larger IoT project portfolio, the Smarter Buildings project adapted due to COVID-19 impacts and was focused on deploying energy-monitoring sensors across THC’s building estate. This initiative enables more efficient energy management.

Building on Phase 1, Phase 2 of Smart Mobility extended to Variable Messaging Systems (VMS) and Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) specifically for travel routes to ferry terminals, enhancing connectivity for residents and visitors.
