In any town or city, it’s vital that good quality, affordable housing exists if people are to be attracted to take up jobs and put down roots. And in Scotland, new developments are coming that will create new and vibrant communities.

In Aberdeen, the city council is aiming to build up to 1650 new homes in the Northfield area, along with shops and community facilities.

The plan ties in with a wider commitment to creating 20-minute neighbourhoods and a drive towards net zero.

There will be a travel hub along with storage for bikes, car club parking spaces and electric vehicle charging bays. And there will be allotments, a community garden and maybe even a football pitch, too

Developers say the project will provide “much needed affordable and market housing” while creating a “sense of place and community”.

Meanwhile, In Dundee, the public are being asked for their views on a plan to turn a former nightclub into affordable flats.

The building, in Brown Street, is close to the Bell Street area of the city centre that is to benefit from Levelling Up cash from the UK Government. And building flats there ties in with plans to attract more people into Dundee City Centre to live.

The firm behind the project, Cullross Ltd, is aiming to build 72 flats on the site of the old Oxygen nightclub. Mark Beaton, Director of Cullross Ltd. said: “We are delighted to share our more detailed plans for much-needed affordable housing in Dundee.”

And in Edinburgh, building work has started on affordable homes in Granton, with seventy net zero flats taking shape on Waterfront Avenue.

The apartments will be rented as social housing owned and managed by Edinburgh City Council.

The homes are designed to reach as close to net zero carbon as possible, with the aim of lowering energy demands, eliminating carbon emissions and improving the living environment for residents.

And work will also soon begin on transforming the old Granton Gas Works into a new city park, which will include space for outdoor events.

New, affordable homes in our cities will attract more people who want to create bright and successful futures. And that’s something to celebrate.
